This new touring exhibition explores the rich history and legacy of the Byzantine Empire – a Roman, Greek-speaking, Christian empire which flourished for more than 1,000 years (AD 330–1453).

From monumental architectural sculpture and icons to silver treasure and fine jewellery, visitors will encounter stunning and unique objects from across the empire's expanse and its capital of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), set within the vibrant political and religious context of the age.

The exhibition examines popular misconceptions about Byzantium which have arisen from biased medieval and modern attempts to position papal Rome and various kingdoms of the West as the true heirs to the Roman Empire.
