The art of imitation

Whether termed 'fakes', 'forgeries', 'replicas' or 'imitations', these artefacts and artworks reveal fascinating stories of deception and detection, restoration, and cultural preservation from around the globe, stretching back from today to our ancient past.

The exhibition brings together objects from all departments of the British Museum collection. Some entered the museum in error while others were knowingly acquired for their historical significance. Many are rarely, if ever, on open display while others feature prominently in the public galleries.
