This intriguing exhibition explores objects of questionable authenticity to investigate the motives behind their creation.

Whether termed 'fakes', 'forgeries', 'replicas' or 'imitations', these artefacts and artworks reveal fascinating stories of deception and detection, restoration, and cultural preservation from around the globe, stretching back from today to our ancient past.

The exhibition brings together objects from all departments of the British Museum collection. Some entered the museum in error while others were knowingly acquired for their historical significance. Many are rarely, if ever, on open display while others feature prominently in the public galleries. From fake news to the future of replication, join the British Museum team to ask what defines authenticity and does it always matter?
