Beyond the Great Wave: works by Hokusai from the British Museum

This exhibition features a broad selection of works produced right up to Hokusai's death at the age of 90, including a beautiful early example of his iconic print The Great Wave.

Visitors will be able to examine Hokusai's personal beliefs through paintings, drawings, woodblock prints and illustrated books, several of which have never been seen internationally before.

Distinct from the art of his Japanese contemporaries, Hokusai's works are intensely individual, subjective, energised and sublime, and the exhibition will provide a powerfully emotional and spiritual experience.

Uniquely, the exhibition also includes details on the major Hokusai collectors at the British Museum and gives insight into their enthusiasm, scholarship and appreciation for the artist.
