- This was the first work by Edda Renouf that Alexander Walker acquired - a letter from Frances Carey to the artist dated 26/4/99 describes how he saw 1998-11-7-3 & 4 at the British Museum and "promptly went and bought one for himself from the Rocket Gallery!".
Subsequent correspondence discusses the Museum facilitating a studio visit for Alexander Walker, and Edda Renouf writes to Frances Carey on 10/7/00 that "Mid-June Alexander Walker came to my Paris studio... We had a very special time looking at my paintings and a few of my drawings; and he even acquired a small diptych of acrylic on linen titled 'Flax-Field Echo Diptych-I'. [Not bequeathed to the BM, not a work on paper] When I showed him this work, he suddenly remembered the flax fields of the landscape in Ireland, where he lived as a child. It was very moving to hear him talk about it". The letters are held in the artist's file.
Text from 'Living with art: The Alexander Walker collection' (British Museum Press, 2020):
Created using scraping and incising, this drawing resembles a swatch of woven fabric, fraying at the edges. It is the first work by Renouf that Walker acquired.
