Clark 1992
Though well composed to give a sense of deep space to this coastal panorama, the rough and somewhat rudimentary level of technique - seen, for instance, in the scrubby dotting to suggest vegetation on the distant hills - raises doubts as to whether this work was actually painted by Hiroshige I. It bears a damaged, but apparently authentic signature, and the seal is found on at least one fine 'bijin' painting ('Kobijutsu', suppl. vol. 3 (March 1983), painting no. 3), so it must be concluded that Hiroshige I has 'authorised' the work of a pupil, possibly Hiroshige II (nos 143-5).
Like nos 140, 142 and 143 the painting must have originally been intended for a frame with a gabled top. The location of the view has not been identified.

- Acquisition notes
- The collection of over 2,000 Japanese and Chinese paintings assembled by Prof. William Anderson during his residency in Japan, 1873-1880, was acquired by the Museum in 1881. The items were not listed in the register, but rather were published separately as the 'Descriptive and Historical Catalogue of a Collection of Japanese and Chinese Paintings in the British Museum' (Longmans & Co, 1886).
