Vacancies in the Visitor and Security Services department

We have a number of different shift patterns across our roles, with some roles offering more than one shift pattern option. These are designed to meet the needs of the Museum while also providing flexibility to our staff.

Our working patterns are:

• Monday–Friday: select roles across Visitor Services and Security
• 4 days on, 2 days off: most roles in Visitor Services and some roles in Security
• 4 days on, 4 days off: most roles across Security. Some roles are days only and some work across 24hrs

We also offer a number of part-time roles within the Visitor Services teams, working in the middle of the day on a 4 days on, 2 days off pattern.

The Visitor and Safety team spends their days in the galleries, welcoming visitors, answering questions and directing them around the Museum. They're also responsible for ensuring the safety and security of visitors and the Museum by remaining vigilant across the galleries.

This role would suit those who enjoy engaging with people, working alongside the Museum's collection and are proactive and attentive in spotting potential safety and security concerns.

Usual duties would include patrolling the galleries, checking that display cases are secure, responding to alarms and engaging with visitors to provide information on the collection and help them find their way around. The Visitor and Safety team is a key point of contact for visitors while at the Museum. Their help and guidance can help to make a visit and experience unique and memorable.

The roles within the Visitor Welcome team work across the Museum's ticket desk, cloakroom, information desk and various welcome points to provide information and guidance to visitors as they arrive inside the Museum's building.

The Visitor Welcome team may be the first point of contact within the Museum, providing a warm introduction and orientating visitors for a rewarding visit. This role would suit those that enjoy engaging with people and have experience in information provision and sales, recommending and upselling experiences to visitors.

Usual duties might include: selling tickets on the ticket desk; providing information, advice and guidance on the Museum while working on the information desk; greeting and directing visitors at the doors of the Museum; or working at the cloakroom storing coats and bags.

The Box Office team provide support and guidance to visitors over the phone. This could be booking a ticket to an exhibition, helping a teacher book a school visit or informing a potential visitor about what they can find in the collection. You'll be the first interaction for callers to the Museum and will play a key role in promoting the Museum, its collection and exhibitions. You'll be raising revenue by selling tickets to our special exhibition programme.

This role would suit those with a passion for customer service, experience of dealing with telephone enquiries, revenue generation and with an interest in learning about the Museum and its collection.

Usual duties might include answering phone calls, providing information on the Museum, selling exhibition tickets, packing and sending tickets, booking in group visits and administrative duties.

If you join us as a First Line Manager, you'll lead a team of assistants as they carry out their duties. This will involve effective planning and coordinating of resources, making operational decisions and managing emergency situations. You'll also support employee welfare and continuing professional development so that your team can support the achievement of Museum's goals and targets.

These roles would suit those with experience of first line and operational management, motivating a diverse team of staff and identifying opportunities for improving operational delivery.

If you join as a Manager, you'll manage a team of staff including First Line Managers and provide support to them in managing their large teams to achieve first-rate customer care and safety and security compliance. This will involve operational decisions, managing the team's performance and development, as well as managing departmental projects in your area of expertise. You'll be responsible for operational day-to-day management of the department's duties as well as contributing to the continued development of the Museum and its visitor offer.

These roles would suit those with experience of line and operational management with excellent communication and decision-making skills and the ability to be a motivational leader to staff across the department.

Security Officers are the Museum's security on the ground and operate across a number of our sites. These roles guard Museum entrances, patrol the Museum estate, search bags and respond to incidents. They're the Museum's visible security presence and help to keep the Museum safe and provide an active and reassuring presence to visitors.

This role would suit someone who has an interest in security operations but also enjoys interacting with a large number of visitors. Customer care is a key as not only will you be vigilantly protecting the Museum, but you'll also be the first person that the 6 million visitors see when they arrive.

Usual duties might include interacting with visitors, managing crowds and access at the Museum entrances, guarding vehicle entrances, actively patrolling the Museum estate and responding to alarm activations and emergencies.

The Museum's Control Room monitors the Museum's security systems, cameras and building information systems 24 hours a day to ensure that the Museum estate is safe and secure. Based in our Control Room you'd be monitoring these feeds to identify and manage possible issues. You'd co-ordinate the Museum response and use your keen eye and knowledge of the building to help protect the Museum.

This role would suit someone with control room experience who is looking to work with the latest control room technology while protecting a world-famous tourist attraction.

Usual duties might include radio channel control, monitoring the cameras across the Museum to identify issues and threats, managing the alarm activation procedure, directing colleagues to respond to incidents and associated administration and system management.

The Museum welcomes welcomes thousands of contractors and temporary staff. This role is responsible for ensuring all staff and contractors have the necessary clearance to work in the Museum and it's vital in ensuring that appropriately security-cleared, competent, accredited and fully-trained people are accessing the Museum estate.

This role would suit someone with a passion for customer service, good administration skills, experience of public-facing roles, who's also a confident communicator.

Usual duties might include monitoring all contractor access onto site, producing passes and clearance for staff and contractors, arranging induction sessions, providing keys and arranging access lists. You'll be confident in the use of IT and applications, including customer security databases.

With a department of nearly 300 colleagues, timely, efficient and proactive administration is vital. As well as supporting departmental logistics, providing reports, supporting projects and managing day-to-day departmental finance processes this role also helps to ensure that staff are paid accurately and on time. The role also provides key support to the departmental leaders, ensuring that the work of the department gets done and that the Museum remains safe and secure.

The role would suit someone who is highly organised, has good experience of administrative processes and enjoys being involved with a wide range of departmental activities.

Usual duties might include processing administration and payroll requests, updating all departmental records, organising meetings and working across the department to ensure all administrative processes are completed.

This will involve effective planning and coordinating of resources, making operational decisions and managing emergency situations. You'll also support employee welfare and continuing professional development to achieve the Museum's goals and targets.
